719 The Routine Use of Opioid Medication for Post-Operative Pain Relief Can Risk Long Term Dependence, In Patients Previously Opiate Naive

Abstract Introduction Post-operative pain relief commonly involves opiates. Rising concerns about misuse has increased scrutiny of prescribing practices. In the UK, 12.5% prescriptions are for US, Department Health and Human Services declared an epidemic opiate misuse. We aimed to evaluate practices post-operatively, within a UK teaching hospital, establish risk prolonged use. Method A pan-speciality retrospective observational cohort study was performed. Patients who underwent surgery in year 2018 were included. naïve if their admission Medicine reconciliation GP record described no opiates previous year. Endpoints: proportion patients discharged with remaining on at 1- 2-years post admission. Results 20526 operations performed 17524 patients, across pan-specialities. 8772 673 required further from after discharge, which 331 previously naive. At 1 op, 180 naive remained Conclusions Attention needs be given developing dependence post-operatively. An evidence-based approach should support clinicians preventing crisis UK.
